The Senior School have been exploring Virtual Field trips. These are available free and often link well to Inquiry areas. Our field trip was 'Making Music'. We went out and about with members of the Christchurch Symphony Orchestra, learning about the families of the orchestra, specific instruments, and how a performance comes together.

We mentioned this cybersafety site in our discussions at cluster meetings, but unfortunately couldn't access it to show you more.
Try this link if you are interested. We are part of a pilot scheme introducing this to NZ (it is well-establised in the UK and Australia). It is likely there will be a cost per student once it rolls out across more schools. SuperClubsPLUS

Maui Snares the Sun
This term our school had a week long art intensive where we used art works of various artists as a focus.
In room 3, (Year 1), we looked at the work of New Zealand artist Robyn Kahukiwa - especially focusing on her painting titled I Can Touch the Sky. We noticed that she used ideas and symbols from her Maori heritage, that she often drew her heads sideways and the fingers like a fork. We noticed the simple lines and lack of busy detail and the way she outlined her work in black. We also noticed that the colours she used were bold and bright.
To learn how to make artworks in this style we practiced making sketches of figures with their heads sideways. This was pretty tricky! We then made self-portraits in this style. As Robyn Kahukiwa is a Maori author and illustrator we decided to illustrate the story of Maui Snares the Sun. We sketched our ideas and then worked on simplifying them. We painted the outlines with black P.V.A and used strong dyes to paint in the pictures.
Because we did such a good job we decided to make our artworks into an e-book using photo story. We photographed our paintings and narrated the story. Now we can enjoy our book whenever we want!
